Frequently Asked Questions
Safety and Physical Requirements
-
All flyers must be at least 8 years young. Whether you're 8 or 108 (or anywhere in between), the trapeze is waiting for you!
Children under 14 require a parent or guardian to be present at all times unless the instructors give explicit permission otherwise. A signed waiver from a parent or legal guardian is required for all children.
Please remember, once a spot is reserved, you are responsible for the full cost of the class, even if the child cannot or chooses not to participate in class.
-
Absolutely! Flying trapeze is safe and enjoyable for everyone. To stay safe, listen to your coaches and pay attention to your body. The sport adjusts to your skill level. We use top-quality safety gear—cables, bars, belts—and have skilled instructors, so you're well protected.
-
We believe anyone can fly, but you should think about your body before trying trapeze. You’ll need to climb a ladder, jump from a platform, hold your weight on the bar, and safely exit the net. If you have health complications, like heart problems, back problems, or pregnancy, we recommend that you talk to a doctor before signing up.
-
The ‘weight limit’ of flying trapeze is a little complicated and depends on the specific flyer. Our rig is safe for flyers of any weight, and we strongly believe flying trapeze is an accessible art meant for people of. all abilities, shapes, and sizes, but for some flying trapeze may not be the best place to start. Our weight limit really comes down to you being able to hold your body weight on the trapeze.
If you’re not sure about being able to hold your bodyweight on the trapeze, a good test can be a 25 second straight arm dead hang. We also look at 3 factors - weight, body shape, and grip. So above 250 pounds, body shape, and grip will play a large part in the weight limit for flyers.
If you’re not sure, please feel free to contact us to discuss.

You’ll be flipping through the air in no time, but to do so safely there are some considerations.
Remove all jewelry
Jewelry can get caught and cause serious injury so all jewelry must be removed.
Long hair must be up in an elastic
Long hair needs to be secured to ensure that you can see and it doesn’t get caught on anything in the air or when falling to the net. You cannot use any claw clips as they can cause serious damage to you, our staff, and our equipment.
Flying Trapeze Experience
-
Your first class will always be tailored to you and your needs! You’ll start with ground school with our instructors where will we fit you in one of our safety belts and teach you how to safely clip into the ladder, and prepare you for when your up on the platform. Once our instructors determine you’re ready you’ll head up the ladder to start swinging!
-
No, one of the coolest things about this sport is how accessible it is. While you will need to be able to put your arms overhead and we may teach some tricks with more flexibility, our amazing coaches are able to work with you where you are.
-
Everyone has different preferences when it comes to flying trapeze gear, but for your first class we recommend that you wear comfortable, form fitting clothing. You’ll want something that’s easy to move around in, won’t get caught, impair your vision, or restrict your movement in the air, but also that will protect your skin from the bar and net. While the net is fairly soft, it can be a little rough to walk on or on exposed skin while landing, so we recommend socks. Between turns, you may be more comfortable with sandals. If you have long hair you’ll want to bring an elastic band to put it up (no hair clips).
A good first day checklist would be leggings or snug sweatpants and a shirt with sleeves (even a short one!), socks, sandals, a towel (just in case), and a water bottle.
-
At the end of the standard classes our coaches will climb up to the trapeze on the opposite side of the platform, called the catch trapeze, and you’ll ‘throw’ your trick to them if our instructors have signed you off to catch! Most people are able to try to (and many succeed at least once) on their first class!
-
Absolutely! If you have done flying trapeze before and are comfortable using grips feel free to bring them! Some coach’s might check your grips before the catch portion of the class.
If you have not used grips before, haven’t flown but have grips for another sport, or are trying new grips please let your coach know so they can advise you.
You can use gymnastics grips without a dowel, grips with a dowel, or tape/gauze. You don’t have to wear grips—lots of flyers don’t and we don’t recommend them for beginner flyers. Have questions? Just ask!
-
Want to try tricks out of lines? We need approval from our coaches and a signed waiver. All tricks go through a checklist to make sure everyone stays safe.
If you fly OOL at another rig, send us some videos ahead of time—we can usually review and approve you before class. Keep in mind, we can’t guarantee OOL during class unless you get prior approval, and OOL can be revoked at any time on the coach’s discretion. Our goal is always to be safe and keep you as safe as possible.

General Info

Of course, it’s always fun to bring a friend! There is plenty of room to sit and watch and maybe they will be inspired to join the next class! Please note, that since we are outside it can be hot and we don’t have many extra seats, so if you want to bring a friend, maybe pack an umbrella for the sunshine, and a chair or blanket for the grass to watch you perform your own circus act for them. (We just ask you limit it to 1 or 2 friends, unless you contact us ahead of time)
-
Yes! You can see our classes on our class descriptions, or contact us for private class availability and pricing. It’s a great way to work on a specific skill or trick and can be adapted to your needs.

Absolutely! Tag us on Instagram or TikTok (@musiccitytrapeze)
Taking videos is a great way to learn and improve on your skills, we recommend bringing a tripod or asking other people in you class to film for you so you can refer back to your videos, plus it’s super cool to look back at your progress!
If you take videos of other students please get permission from them before publicly posting their videos. Videos of coach’s instruction is not allowed to be shared publicly, you can tape for your records but for safety reasons we ask that content not be shared, coaching is individualized and it’s important that flyers are always getting instruction in person and not from videos.
